You will need to pass the Nevada Knowledge Tests that are required for the class of license, restriction, and endorsements you wish to possess. A general knowledge test for the Class A or Class B and C license must be successfully completed by all CDL applicants. The information needed to pass these tests is contained in the FREE Nevada CDL Handbook. Please read and study this manual carefully.

All commercial license applicants must meet the following requirements and take the appropriate knowledge tests to receive a permit:
- Minimum Age - You must be at least 21 years of age to operate a commercial motor vehicle in interstate commerce and 25 years of age to drive an over-length combination vehicle (70 feet). Applicants between 18 to 20 years of age may be granted a CDL for intrastate commerce only and cannot transport passengers for hire or hazardous materials requiring placards.
- Medical Examination Card (if required) - You must certify the type of driving you do, and if you are "non-excepted", you must present a Medical Examination Card completed by a Certified Medical Examiner. See the license application or www.dmvnv.com/certify for details.
- Driving Record - When you apply for your CDL you will be asked to certify that you don't have a driver's license from more than one state, provide a list of states that you have held a driver's license for the previous 10 years and certify that your driver's license is not currently suspended, revoked or cancelled in any state nor subject to any of these actions. The DMV will run a national check.
- Proof of Identity - A current Nevada driver license, instruction permit or identification card is sufficient for proof of identity. This must be surrendered. If you are not currently licensed in Nevada, you must present all of the following:
- Your Current, State-Issued License or ID Card This will be hole-punched and returned to you with an interim licensing document. The new license will be mailed.
- Proof of Your Social Security Number - A Social Security card, W-2, 1099, payroll stub with the number listed or other official documents.
- Additional Proof of Identity - You must present your certified birth certificate or abstract or a U.S. passport if you were born in the U.S. If you were born outside the U.S., you will need a valid foreign passport stamped "Processed for I-551", a Resident card or a Certificate of Naturalization. Documents must be originals. You must also present evidence of any legal name change. This may include a marriage certificate, divorce decree, adoption records or court order. - Tank Vehicle Endorsement - 20 questions - No additional skills tests.
- Hazardous Materials Endorsement - 30 questions - No additional skills tests.
- Air Brake Restriction Removal - 25 questions - Additional skills test in vehicle with Air Brakes.
