How do I obtain my Florida Commercial Driver License (CDL)?

All applicants for a Florida Commercial Driver License are required to have an Operators License and pass the vision requirements. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. If they are under 21, they will be restricted to intrastate operation only.

Oral exams may be given in English or Spanish with the exception of skills test or Hazmat exams. Interpreters may not be used during the administration of Florida CDL oral exams or during any portions of the Florida CDL skill exams. Be sure to study the handbook.

Class A Florida CDL Exam Requirements - To operate trucks or truck combinations weighing 26,001 lbs or more, and towing a vehicle/unit over 10,000 lbs, then a Class A license is needed. The following tests are required:
  • General Knowledge test
  • Combinations vehicle test
  • Air Brakes
  • Pre-Trip
  • Basic Skills
  • CDL Road Test
  • Applicable exams for desired endorsements

Class B Florida CDL Exam Requirements - To operate straight trucks and buses 26,001 lbs or more, then a Class B license is needed. The following tests are required:
  • General Knowledge test
  • Air Brakes (if applicable)
  • Pre-Trip
  • Basic Skills
  • CDL Road Test
  • Applicable exams for desired endorsements

Class C Florida CDL Exam Requirements - To operate vehicles transporting placarded amounts of hazardous materials, or vehicles designed to transport more than 15 persons including the driver with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of less than 26,001 lbs, then a Class C license is needed. The following tests are required:
  • General Knowledge test
  • Air Brakes (if applicable)
  • Pre-Trip (if applicable)
  • Basic Skills (if applicable)
  • Florida CDL Road Test
  • Applicable exams for desired endorsements

Already have an out of state CDL?
We will reciprocate an out of state or a Canadian commercial driver license. However, an out of state applicant with a hazmat endorsement will have to reapply for a hazmat endorsement, which will include background check, appropriate exams and fees.

Florida CDL Written Knowledge Tests
You will need to pass the Florida Knowledge Tests that are required for the class of license, restriction, and endorsements you wish to possess. A general knowledge test for the Class A or Class B and C license must be successfully completed by all CDL applicants. The information needed to pass these tests is contained in the FREE Florida CDL Handbook. Please read and study this manual carefully.
  • Class A - 70 Questions (50 GK + 20 Combination Vehicles) - Skills test required.
  • Class B - 50 Questions - Skills test required.
  • Class C - 50 Questions - Skills test required for bus, school bus and air brakes vehicles..
  • Passenger Endorsement - 20 questions - Skills test required in bus.
  • School Bus Endorsement - 25 questions - Skills test required in school bus.
  • Doubles/Triples Endorsement - 20 questions - No additional skills tests.
  • Tank Vehicle Endorsement - 20 questions - No additional skills tests.
  • Hazardous Materials Endorsement - 30 questions - No additional skills tests.
  • Air Brake Restriction Removal - 25 questions - Additional skills test in vehicle with Air Brakes.
